Couldn't find the thread that we were talking about Hfd pubs, so started this one (hope that's OK).
I've just come across references to another couple of cider pubs in Hfd, if you're going to be visiting again, Gents.
One is The Volunteer, on a road I can't remember the name of but I can picture (about 5 min walk out of town from The Barrels), and the other is on the left down Eign Road (about 5 mins walk further on from the Volunteer, making it about 10 mins walk from the Barrels). It'd be a good small crawl route.
If you're interested, I'll get the full details. I know the Volunteer (round the corner from a friend's house, and we used to go there occasionally years ago), and can picture the other one (even though I've forgotten it's name) and remember playing skittles in their alley. Had lunch in the Volunteer a yr or so ago and it was friendly, with a yard out the back with tables outside, good food and good value.
(From reading the same book) I have also now vowed to think twice before cursing Bulmers, after reading about how they used to do everything by hand up to about 1950 (including making pomagne by hand in proper champagne style).
Oh, and if you're reading this Tharg, I also found another (apparently traditional and local) name for GL: Guaranteed Legover!

Has anyone been to the cider pub opposite the back entrance of Asdal in Bedminster near to the Windmill Hill City Farm ineeeeet? It's called the something Apple I think. Is it any good loik or wot? |

Seriously though, is anyone up for the fire-walking? We could stay over in Hereford and check out all those cider pubs too, and it would be a great feature for the website!

And you're forgetting the thing about being able to shoot Welshmen caught on the Cathedral Close after dark as long as you use a crossbow. |

A what? Why hasn't this been suggested before?
Hereford has cider, fire and is within missile range of Wales - what more could we want for NYE?

Nope, no plans to go over Christmas im afraid, although it looks like it would be a good Christmassy place to do a pub crawl. I think i saw a "fire-walking" display/competition planned for NYE too? Have a good one!

I'll dig out the details, Gents. Do you have plans to go to Hfd over Christmas at all (only asking as me and Mrs I will be there between Xmas and NYE, and we're planning a night round the pubs in town)? |

Can't argue with you there. I have been made to rethink though, based on reading this book (which I will lend you if you want. I think you'd be interested).
My new view is that (if you believe all you read) HP Bulmers (and the Gloucester Cider Co/Wickwar Brewery - the people who originally had the GL brand before being sold to HPB) used to make good, real, cider (bit of sulphate and some added yeast, but pretty real in my book) for at least half of this century (i.e. they were like Westons, but on a bigger scale), and then they went all industrial. GL apparently, used to the farm labourer's choice (there's a great story about a group of 4 old boys writing in to ask for the strength of GL to be reduced because they used to like to each buy a round at lunchtime, and 4 pints was a bit too much for them to work in the afternoon!) |

Cheers, these pubs sound good, what cider do they sell? I was a bit reluctant to walk too far out of town in any one direction, not knowing whether there was even any cider pubs out there, although next time im there I will have more of a clue where i am going. I'd like to go back and have a better look around again, but saying that there is loads of cider places I'd like to check out.
I visited the cider Museum too, which has loads of Bulmers stuff (as they helped start it). It depresses me even more to think that they only made quality cider for over 50 years, but have now dumped it for terrible stuff like Strongbow, all that expertise, knowledge and resources wasted  . Why why why did they do it? It can't have been a popular decision with cider-drinkers or those staff who had taken pride in making a really nice quality product surely? I suppose they were just trying to aim at a wider audience?
As for GL: Guaranteed Legover, is this supposed to mean that ladies drinking GL = Guaranteed Legover... or does it mean if you drink GL yourself you will acquire a type of cider-power irresistable to ladies and will be guaranteed a legover yourself?

Guaranteed Loopy more like - I still haven't forgiven you for making me drink some recently "for old times' sake" - I'd forgotten how bad it was.
