Posted - 16/05/2005 : 20:08:25 Had a great weekend in Sheffield last week, cheers for showing us round Dave/Garry. We were amazed at how good the pubs were, all the ones we saw before the match had massive ranges of ales and bottled fruit beers from Belguim, all really nice. Most had a cider on offer too, Saxon seemed most popular but that weren't really to my taste - its made by an Italian bloke from apple concentrate and was a bit sweet for me. Kelham island had a decent pint of Old Rosie, and we visited a place after the match that did a lethal pint of BroadOak which was 8.4% and a right phelm-shaker. Can't remember the name of that pub.
In Manchester we only found one really good cider/ale pub - The Fringe Bar (can't remember address). This place was really good, loads of beers on tap, great jukebox, and a varying guest cider which when we visited was Thatchers, much to our dissappointment. It was a nice pint tho.
Didn't have much time to check out any different pubs when we returned to Sheffield on monday, but went back to The Fat Cat for some ales and a steak pie.
Brilliant weekend, and City even won the match!

Posted - 12/04/2005 : 16:26:47 Sheffield Wednesday have announced that their final Coca-Cola League One match of the season against Bristol City will be an all-ticket game.
The club has taken the decision following discussions with South Yorkshire Police, to help ensure spectator safety at the game on Saturday 7 May. Ticket sales for the match will finish at 5.00pm on Friday 6 May - no tickets will be sold to any supporter on the day of the game.
Owls chief executive Kaven Walker said: "This is likely to be an important game for both sides and we are sure there will be a large attendance on the final day of the season. We understand this decision may cause some inconvenience to supporters but would ask fans to remember it has been taken with their safety in mind."
Wednesday hope the move will prevent the long queues seen at Hillsborough for last season's LDV Vans Trophy area final, when a large match day 'walk-up' meant some fans missed the start of the game after queuing for 45 minutes. It will also prevent the potential of supporters from arriving without a ticket on May 7 to find the game sold out.

Posted - 05/04/2005 : 09:32:00 Yeah The Barn is definitely worth a visit, give us a shout if you come down.
Newton Abbot cider bar is absolutely amazing, I used to live in Plymouth and make regular day-trips up to sample a few pints and stock up on a few milk cartons of Sams to bring back on the train.
Dont know of a Berkely in Clifton... you dont mean Beaufort do you? Beaufort is another of my favourites. Avon Packet is good, was there on Saturday and might be back tonight before City. Have you been to the Coronation is Southville? Great cider pub, and the only place in the world that sells the legendary Janets Jungle Juice!
Another of my favourites would be the Miners Rest in Long Ashton, worth a stop on the way if you do make the journey from Bristol to The Old Barn in Nailsea.

Posted - 04/04/2005 : 20:25:34 Al has visited Summers a few times and told me that news a while ago, I guessed someone would have taken the job on by now, but i haven't heard anything.
The Ship used to be our lunchtime works local, it had a great range of ciders about 3 years ago, but last time i went it only had a not-too-nice pint of Taunton. Whats it like now?
The only 2 good cider pubs in Nailsea are The Blue Flame and Old Barn, both are at the furthest ends of Nailsea from each other. Blue Flame is straight out of the 1850's, more a house than pub, with nothing spent on renovations in the last 100 years. It has a big garden and does a lovely pint of Thatchers and often another cider. It's quite a way out of town in the West End towards Clevedon over the moors. The Old Barn is also great to sit outside in the summer, its just off the main road into Nailsea from Long Ashton, next to Wraxall house hotel. Sells Thatchers, Kingston Press, Stowford Press and sometimes Westons. Has impressive cobwebs.
Apart from that, Nailsea is rubbish for cider. Nearer the centre The Friendship sell cloudy Thatchers, The Glasshouse sell sparkling Thatchers and The Sawyers sell Thatchers Mendip out of plastic bottles - all pretty bad but better than the lager alternatives all the same. Nearer the Hannah More Road area, The Ring O Bells sells sparkling Thatchers and The Moorend Spout has had a Cheddar Valley tap for the last few months but hasn't actually served any cider out of it yet - they assured me yesterday that they will get some in for the summer so i look forward to that.

Posted - 03/04/2005 : 12:22:26 19 pints?!?! We didn't even manage 19 halves i dont think, and we were wrecked. I don't suppose you found my 7 pages of tasting notes i lost did you? That would be fantastic if the Beer Fest stocks some HM Zider next year, we will definitely keep a barrel back.
Whats happening to Wednesday??? They are on a reallly bad run - is MacLean out for the season? Hope he isn't back to face us. If we can win our 2 games in hand and win up at Hillsborough we may be able to sneak in front of you right on the last day of the season!

Posted - 31/03/2005 : 09:22:59 Welcome to the forum, Gorman!
I would never of guessed you were MANAGER of the cider-bar, you seemed to be drinking and pissing-around more than any of the other staff by quite a way! Any chance the beer festival may be interested in stocking a barrel of Hannah More Zider next year?? Lord Lucan has started work on a review and it'll be online sometime soon, with lots of photos.
I'll definitely be going up to Sheffield for the weekend, staying til tuesday i think (when we were more optimistic about making the play-offs we planned this as a end-of-season party, and a few of us are staying up to see Queen gig on monday night), so plenty of time to check out those cider bars. Can't believe there is that many, I thought we'd be lucky to find any cider up North. What's that Saxon stuff like?

Posted - 30/03/2005 : 13:23:03 Hello Dave Ah yes, the memory of your cider cocktail is still lingering in my liver.. Hopefully the photos of the fest will be on here soon eh Gents? Good luck with the cider making - as manager of the beer fest can you get your hands on any barrells (empty or full it doesn't matter)? Reckon Al and the HMZ cider making fraternity would be interested... |
