We're starting to get (dis)organised with our plans to make cider this Autumn. Are you lads planning another batch of the famous HMZ (or have you all given up, realising that London is the new rightful home of zider)?

We built a (pretty makeshift) shed around our barrels (out of 2x1 and corrugated sheeting). It's worked fine and (apart from a bit of rust around the nails) is ready and raring for another year. Cost next to nothing (and would have cost less if we could have scrounged the materials instead of paying for them), and required very little in the way of skill or tools (saw, hammer, glue, nails, dining table used as workbench).

I reckon it might. We could always modify the bunker to accommodate the bad boy though.

I am in the preliminary stages of planning to turn an old coal bunker behind me shed into a custom built cider storage area. It has a lift up roof on it and I reckon if I take a gert sledge ammer to the front, I can open it up and fit some bars to support barrels or manucubes or anything really.

I had forgotten about Mr JJJ's advice about keeping the stuff outside.

I don't really have any storage at my house, I think Jungle Jim has volunteered some space, and possibly Lord Lucan. It was sort of suggested to maybe have a few pressing sessions in a couple of different places - so we can press the cider where its actually going to be stored, and no-ones garden gets too churned up, thats something to consider. After speaking to Mr JJJ the other week, he seemed to think that the temperature you keep cider fermenting at wasn't TOO important (he keeps his in a fairly cold barn), so spare garages may be an option we ruled out last time.

What would be great is if we could fill up Brian (the 320 pint ex-bourbon barrel) but this takes up a fair bit of room - any takers?

We should try and get our presses working this summer, using these alongside Al's shredder will be pretty effective. Maybe worth getting another shredder too.

It's easy Al. You just have to move a few inessential things out to give the cider house-room. Start with beds, sofas, tvs, etc, and work on to bathtubs/boilers/clothes/records. You'll have plenty of room.

I agree with Tharg we must have a cider production related meeting (possibly incorporating a cider crawl??) and get something sorted out.

Gents, I'll ring up the apple man and find out when the Kingston Blacks are ready for gathering. He did say they were slightly earlier than the variety we had last year so I reckon it should be late September. We can always use my garden again for pressing but the main problem is going to be storage if we make a lot.

What say you?

We had our first cider making meeting of the season last night. We had a couple of new faces too. It's all systems go. You boys have definitely got to get another batch going this year.

Im sure we'll be trying to get something together to attempt to challenge your London brew, no definite plans just yet, and we'll have a lot to sort out but will keep you posted.
