I never realised cider was that popular in Germany but that place sounds great. The only German cider I have tried is the stuff they used to sell in Bristol Beirkeller - absolutely lethal, and caused me to become the most drunk I've ever been.

Gents, I’ve been to Frankfurt and had apfelwein. It’s an odd drink, and I’m not convinced it’s the same as cider at all. It seemed to me to be less tasty and stronger than real cider, which made me think that it was, literally apple wine (i.e. that they’d added lots of sugar to the juice).
Having said all this, though, it’s “any port in a storm”, and I do remember that the types of places that sold apfelwein were generally the places where you could have a good hearty meal of rich but simple pork-based cuisine and where you wouldn’t look out of place if you started drooling and falling off your chair. So I did feel at home.

That drink you describe sounds very much like the one I have tried (what I remember anyway). Now you come to mention it, it tasted a bit like the demijohn of HMZ that we added loads of sugar to, to try and create a monster. Maybe the german apples just taste different, or have a higher sugar content? I haven't really heard much about German apples before. Anyway, the pork-based cuisine is enough to convince me that place is worth a visit.
