Greetings to cider lovers from a former resident of Bedminster, Bristol now in Devon!
North Devon Cider Trials will be happening at Eggesford Gardens near Eggesford Station on A377 in middle of Devon on Saturday 22nd October as part of the Apple Day. This is about 4 miles from the Winkleigh Cider (ex Sam Inch's) factory. |

| Is this (Sam Inch) anything to do with the "Sam's cider" I've had at Newton Abbot? That was very good, as I remember it. |

Yes. Sam's Cider is a Winkleigh cider product. Sam Inch started the cider making in Winkleigh and built it up to 3rd biggest in country. Then sold to Bulmers in late 1990s. Bulmers closed the plant and kept the 'Inch's' name so Winkleigh employees bought the plant and named their cider 'Sams'.
By the way I'm trying to update the wiki ukcider pub guide for Mid and North Devon so if you are visiting the Winkleigh/Chulmleigh area have a look at it first.

Somehow I completely missed this post when it first came on the forum, but greetings to you too Daved.
I've heard that story before, I like to think that Sam fleeced Bulmers for some extortionate amount, spent a small part of it on buying back what he'd just sold and carried on making cider as before, except even nicer, and Bulmers were just left with less money to invest in poisoning us with their rubbish (but I have no idea if thats true).
Don't know much about the Winkleigh/Chulmleigh cider scene but I noticed the other day that there are lots of Bristol/Somerset pubs we know about that aren't in the Wiki so I'll pass on details when i got a bit of time.

Hello Gents and others.
I think you are broadly right about Winkleigh.
If you are thinking of coming down to these parts consider visiting village of Sandford nr. Crediton where Sandford Orchards available - proper Devon stuff with loads of body. Also try Grays in village of Tedburn St Mary off A30.

A few of us are thinking off venturing to Newton Abbot next month so maybe we will try and take a detour to some of these places. Daved - do you know if Sam's are open to the public for any type of tour, or at least have a shop? And are there any cider-pubs near by?
Im guessing the problem with visiting these cider outlets is that they are tricky to get to by public transport (that's the case with most of the Somerset & Herefordshire producers)? And strangely enough, no-one ever wants to drive on these cider-sampling visits!

Sorry to be 4 months too late with reply....
Winkleigh Cider does indeed have a shop, open approx 9-5 also Sats and possibly Sun morning. There are tours but ring them for details.
Try the Kings Arms in Winkleigh village - food all day.

Hmmm I just happen to be going to Exeter and Paignton in July so I reckon these are definite stop-off points.
Im doing a cycling tour along the coast of Devon and Cornwall in July so id be very grateful of any suggestions of cider pubs along the way that I can check out. Winkleigh may be slightly too far inland, but if we're feeling energetic that day we might try and check it out.
