Good luck with your pressing. I did the first of this year's pressings with Mr. Orchard a couple of weeks ago (I swear the apples are getting heavier) and I'm attending another one tomorrow at an allotment in South East London which has been arranged by a chap from CAMRA. We've sorted out the apples for this year's SE1 extravanza too. Try and save some of your cider this time and we'll all get together for a taste off.
And you will know us by the trail of empties.... |

Finished our pressing. Very tired. Photos will be up soon no doubt. Shame you couldn't make it Gents. But we should have a taste-off when it's ready.

Excellent work, how many gallons did you get in the end?
Sorry i couldn't get across for it, we didn't even wake up til 12 on sunday so we had no chance of getting over to the farm before you finished.
Look forward to seeing the photos, and i'll definitely keep you back a bottle when ours is finished for the taste off.

I believe we made about 88 gallons, slightly less than last year but we had slightly fewer apples. We'd pressed everything on Saturday except for half a dozen sacks which we finished off pretty quickly on Sunday, the rest of the morning was spent eating cake and drinking cider.

Ah if only we'd had that many apples, and presses like that - is the round one a new one from last year? Looks about 10 times the size of ours!
Nice hat and mostache too Tharg.
How is yours coming along fermentation-wise? Ours has virtually stopped but we're not sure whether thats because of the cold weather or whether its just finished.

Both presses were the same as last year. The big barrel one was about as tall as your torso, if that makes any sense. It took more pulp than the rack and cheese style one, but wasn't as efficient was the general view.
Ours has stopped any sort of quick bubbling, but there is still pressure building up in the airlocks, and so it's still going slowly. I'll have to comsult my cider diary from last year to see where we were at this time last yr.
Will report back. |

I was actually considering the cider last night. I have yet to rack off the stuff outside but it's been so kin freezin that it might be best to leave ot a bit and hope it starts to ferment again when the weather warms up.
The stuff indoors was racked several weeks ago and has cleared down completely. I haven't tried any yet but could sample some this weekend and post the results. It certainly smells nice at any rate.

We racked ours yesterday. Of the 4 containers, they all tasted different and had SGs of between aprox 1005 to 1015 (one was inside, 3 were outside. The one inside had fermented out more), from an OG of approx 1052.
They all tasted good, and they're back under airlock to mature a bit/carry on fermenting. |

We are thinking of racking off our barrel on Saturday about 4-ish before walking to the Coronation for the Wassailing meet-up. Should only be a 2 or 3 man job and not take long but if anyone wants to come along then give me a shout and i'll tell you details.
How potentailly alcaholic is that then Ivanhoe? I'll check ours Saturday. Apparently the nicest spellig one is the demijohn made from 100% Bramleys!!
