The Glasshouse tasted defeat for the first time this season going out of the Somerset FA Cup on penalties after a 10 goal feast at the Grove.
The Glass opened the day's scoring via a quick counter attack when Smith set Rodda free to home in on goal and open his account for the season. The Glass were soon 2 up when Brown danced in from the right to add his second in as many weeks. 2-0. Tone Youth were still in this game and had some exceptional players on show, and make shift keeper Tonkin saved bravely from close range which reminded the Glasshouse that there was a game on. Minutes later the Glass were caught the wrong side and a TY winger chased a long ball that any normal keeper would have come for, but the Glass don't do normal keepers with a 2nd outfielder in goal in as many weeks, and TY pulled one back. Goodall was introduced prior to HT with immediate effect, replacing the injured Brown and he came to the party with a goal to put back in place Nailsea's 2 goal margin at the end of 45. 3-1.
The Glass started the 2nd half brightly, and some fine passing led to the ball being squared and Goodall's 1st time shot cracked the post, and this saw a turn in the tide. TY were now starting to get some freedom down both flanks, and some slack marking on a throw saw a TY cross converted to bring them back within one. It was taking 2 or 3 of the TY players to cope with Stuey Lee in midfield as he danced in and around the opposition. One oponenent said "he has the grace of Maradonna". Stuey's fine footwork alongside his midfield counterpart Cook saw them carve a chance open for Jammer who duly bagged to open the 2 goal gap again. 4-2. With 10 minutes remaining the Glass allowed TY to take the game to extra time, a mazy run saw the TY winger beat Tonkin embarrassingly at his near post, and then a further strike on 90 minutes sent the game into overtime. 4-4.
Still looking for a keeper the Glass put Goodall in goal and set Tonkin outfield to freshen up the tiring legs. Extra Time saw TY take the lead for the first time in the tie and the Glasshouse had to put all hands to the pump as they strived for an equaliser. 4-5. With Kev Ling pushing on to supply quality ball from deep, and Sampson sitting in to feed the wingers the Glass started to turn the screw, and with only seconds left on the clock Cook volleyed past the away custodian to see the game into penalties. 5-5.
Unlike a usual lottery there wasn't $120m up for grabs, just a place in the Somerset FA Cup Quarter Finals. Jammer, Stu Lee, Tonks and Roberts converted in turn, only to be matched goal for goal by Tone Youth. Unfortunately Nailsea's 5th penalty was saved and TY converted to win the tie. Ling's penalty was of a good substance, unfortunately this time the keeper had guessed right. All 10 penalties were taken at the highest of standards, the England National team should have taken note.
Good luck goes to Tone Youth in their conquest for silverware. They never gave up and were gracious in victory. 5-5 AET, 4-5 on penalties (5 pens each) |
