This was on the front page of last week's Forest Review, our local free paper: Cider king on track for British record!
Landlord David Price is claiming a record for his pub...he reckons his cellar of 35 different cider brews is the biggest in Britain. Mr Price, owner of Newnham's Railway Inn and Carriages Restaurant, is planning to sell even more - he is eyeing up a number of extra locally produced ciders to tickle the palates of his enthusiastic regulars. Well known as a local historian and a Forest of Dean Inclosure Commissioner - the body which oversees how much Forest of Dean woodland can be fenced in at any one time - Mr Price is a local scrumpy fan.
"It is important to keep our local brews available such as perry produced from Blakeney Red pear trees and it is possible to do this now that so many are being bottled," said Mr Price.
Among the favourites, Mr Price sells Nick Bull's Severnsider Cider from Awre: a brew from Ray Tosh of Pleasant Style is expected shortly.
He always has five ciders on draught, one of which is advertised as "Cider of the Wik"!
Sad to say I've not been there yet, but I shall be going very shortly. Newnham is on the A48, a few miles south west of Gloucester.

Ive done some research on this. The nearest train station is Cam & Dursley (7 miles away) which you can get to directly from Bristol and it only takes 33 minutes!
So basically we could be at this Cider Heaven in less than an hour! I think a day out in the summer is definitely called for...
Whose up for it?

Forgive my presumption, but if you go to Dursley, you still have to negotiate the Severn. Assuming you're using public transport, a train from Bristol to Gloucester, and then the 73 (Newport bus) takes you through Newnham. Gloucester bus station is two minutes walk from the railway station. Or - Bristol to Newport, and then the 73 (Gloucester bus) back the other way, although this latter option will result in a longer bus ride, and a trek into W*les :-(
I can find out the bus times for you if you need them.

ah crap i didn't realise the river was in between, multimap just told me the station was 7.2 miles away so i thought it would be a short taxi ride. Do you know what company runs the bus service you mention? I couldn't find any info of buses running thru Newnham...

I'm back in london, and my timetable is in the Forest.....the bus company's site is crap, it just tells you that the buses are hourly, if you get in touch with: timetables@gloucestershire.gov.uk and ask for details of the 73 service between Gloucester and Newport, that's the one for Newnham. Be aware that the last bus back to Gloucester isn't very late.

Only 18 months after this was originally discussed I finally got to go here yesterday. I was due to go to Newton Abbot with Al Caholic but due to engineering works on the trains we came up here instead, and all I can say is thank God for engineering works, this place is AMAZING!
The Draught ciders that i can remember were Westons 1st Press, Vintage, Old Rosie, Stowford, Thatchers Heritage, Cheddar Valley, 2 Broome Hill ciders (one was a mix of Dabinett and Bramley, the other i cant remember but it was tasty), and maybe a couple more too... But that was only the start of it, the bottled ciders were the real highlight - LOADS of local ones i'd never even heard of, all delicious. Nick Bull and Ray Tosh were in the pub and took time to chat to us about their cider-making, everyone in the pub was really friendly and very very enthusiastic about cider, and seemed totally amazed that we'd travelled up there.
Easily the best cider pub I've ever been to. Didn't think anything could top Newton Abbot Cider Bar but this wins just on the range of stuff available. Seriously thinking of moving to Newnham. Would recommend eating something before going to the pub tho, as they were only serving pork pies.

Gents, you put me to shame. Despite living 6 miles away from there, I've still yet to visit. Everytime I go to the Forest a mate of mine keeps saying we ought to go, but the problem is usually transport, how did you get there? Did you meet "Pele" Price? I went to school with him.

Yep we met Mr Price, another friendly chap, he kept appearing with more and more different ciders for us to try whenever we were thinking about leaving.
We got the No.73 bus from Gloucester, it was going to Newport (so the downside is that its full of Welsh people), it seems to run once an hour until 6pm and i think it leaves 35mins past every hour from Gloucester. Well worth the journey id say!

I went to The Railway on Friday but can't recall much. I was half cut when I got there and then we got stuck into the "cider of the wik" sadly, I can't remember what this was (or how I got home). Mr Price wasn't about, but his pub was heaving with a very young crowd. I shall go back soon and try and give a more objective (sober) opinion.

Good work, at least you managed to get there, but you must have ended up being in a complete mess if you were drunk beforehand because a few pints of their weakest cider is enough to make a sober man start feeling the effects.
Cant imagine what that pub can be like heaving, or with a young crowd, but it sounds good... We were the youngest customers in there by at least 50 years when we visited, apart from the dog.
