New debate, the following players will be out of contract this summer, who should stay and who should go?

Lee Peacock - not sure
Christian Roberts - not sure
Mickey Bell - not sure
Matt Hill - keep
Louis Carey - keep
Joe Burnell - GO!
Tony Rougier - keep
Lee Matthews - GO!

Also is it time for DW to go? 3rd two seasons on the trot - he seems to lack that final edge and just doesn't seem to be able to motivate the players on the big occasion. Will he do it next season?

Peter Taylor has a huge job at hull, they are a club going places why would he leave there and come to city?

I got a feeling roeder is on the shortlist

Gentz,

I think the reason he was rejected before was because of the advice of someone behind the scenes at city who is no longer there. I think he would be a good manager for city, but like you say, would he want to come now?
Gents Posted - 04/06/2004 : 15:24:20
if i rememeber right i think Taylor has applied for the City job twice before, and been turned down twice. Once when he had just left England u21's, we appointed Pulis instead(!?!??!?) and Taylor went to Gillingham, and then the year after we chose Wilson over Taylor. I think so anyway, not 100% sure. Whether he would come now, i dunno, he wouldn't be cheap i'd imagine... I think City and Taylor could be good together tho, i'd have more confidence of him getting the best out of our generally young squad then many of the other managers we may be able to attract.

I would love to see Peter Taylor as I think he would be great at taking advantage of the academy and integrating the young players into the side.

Other than that maybe Fawthorp and Tinman double act to keep it real.

I don't really think we need a "big name" manager, in fact a manager who knows divisions lower than the Premiership would probbaly be more suitable, someone who has experience of competing against these frustrating second division 2 clubs and beating them, as its been the lower-placed teams that we have often struggled to turn over this year.

Sturrock, Holloway & McGee weren't exactly big-name managers when they took over at the 3 clubs that have just been promoted, but they did a job of getting their teams out of this division on much more limited resources than Wilson. Our priority has to be to get in Division One, and we need a man who can do this.

Im all for stability when it comes to managers, and think many are sacked far too rashley, but you can't just argue for stability just for stabilitys sake. The slow progress that Wilson was making appears to have ceased, he ran out of ideas last year, doesn't look like he has any fresh ones, and the only stability he can offer is stability as a 2nd Div side. It's time for someone fresh to come in and get us out of this division and where we belong.

he thought he would get himself a nice little job before he gets sacked, he thinks to himself a pedo stayed there for years without getting sacked so i'm onto a winner. they are not used to winning so no one expects anything from me.

But you still have not come up with any ideas for a replacement......not all clubs are big enought to attract the likes of Santini french national coach!!!

totally disagree, why do you have to go for well known managers, Wilson has never been a success at any club Sheff wed he got the boot from the local mp's and at barnsley he took over a very good team and f"cked them up. Every year the min requirment was promotion 4 years on and still we are the brides maid.

I think he should stay. I do agree with both aruguements to an extent but think sacking him will do more harm than good.

Another thing, everytime I have seen city this season (with a couple of exceptions, i.e. Cardiff) they have been a completely different team either side of half time. Anyone else agree?

Never thought I would say this but I have to agree with Rob....if you sacked Wilson there is no bigger name manager that u could attract to the club....Who could u bring in?......Wilson is a top name manager and need to be given time....look at alec ferguson - he won nothing at united for years but the board kept the faith and look at united now.....sacking managers for finishing 3rd is just plain stupid......

Well for the past couple of years we have had to sit here and put up with smaller clubs overtaking us and making the First Division - if teams like Rotherham, Plymouth, Brighton, Wigan, QPR, Crewe, Reading, etc (all smaller clubs, with less potential, the majority with a lot less cash and no academy) can find managers that are capable of getting them out of this division on limited resources why shouldn't we be able to find one? Im not an expert on what managers are around an available but any of the usual suspects mentioned (John Ward, Peter Taylor, Leroy Rosenior, Keith Curle, Fawthrop/Tinman double act) could do a better job, and im sure there are loads of others out there. We have the players already, we just need a man who can see their strenghs and play to them...

We do have good attacking players, loads of them. Quick players, who are good with their feet, although Wilson's tactics last year didn't get the best out of them. We had defenders playing in midfield, central midfielders on the wing, leaving a midfield that often sat too deep to support the attack and resulting in our defence punting the ball up to our strikers - many of which didn't win a header all season. I think Gillespie sounds a great prospect too, but will he get a chance? Peacock will start every game, id guess Roberts will stay up front too on recent form, that leaves 3 strikers under the age of 21 who should be the future of the club competing for 1 or 2 places on the bench, where 1 of them might be lucky enough to get 10 minutes up front every other week!! How are they supposed to improve and learn?

It's true that the players offered contracts may not sign them, but i can't see them getting offered much better elsewhere, and it's the fact Wilson offered them in the first place that worries me...

Just been reading the Evening Post's review of the season, so i'll leave you with this Wilson quote from AUGUST, after drawing 1-1 with Chesterfield: "We should have been tighter at set pieces. We had more than our share of possesion and chances, and should have wrapped the game up" - This could have been said about at least 20 games that followed, so why the hell didnt he sort it out earlier? Clueless.

The temptation is to blame Wilson for his past failings, but I think it's important to keep looking forwards. If we had no manager and had a list of the candidates mentioned plus Wilson I think a lot of people would choose him. Add in to the equation he will be working with a squad which he has virtually hand picked and has had for 3 years then I think he is still by far our best option. Also, whilst Goodfellow, Wilkshire, Miller and Murray all haven't lived up to potential this year, with the possible exception of Murray we have to believe they will be better players next season, and with those four plus Roberts and Aaron Brown on form going forwards, and the league's best defence behind them then we will take some stopping! Realistically I can't see us even drawing a game, let alone losing.

I agree. You'd have to pay his 2 year contract off, so you have to make sure you have someone better in the pipeline.

If the board has no-one in mind, it would be rash sacking a manager who has at the very least got us to the play-offs 2 seasons running, and fuel his compensation, just for another numpty to take the bridge.

Perhaps HMZ should contemplate a buy-out?
