I came across this article about "hard" cider in the USA, it's quite interesting and may offer some hope to Chowie in his mission to find some decent cider over there. Not sure what it'll taste like but at least someone is making an effort.

When cider was reintroduced to the American market in 1990, the category experienced rapid growth. That year, 115,000 cases of hard cider were sold nationwide, which grew to a total of 1.6 million cases in 1995. In 1997 sales totaled 2.7 million cases.

That growth, however, was short-lived. It peaked in 2001 at 4.6 million cases nationally, and has declined 27 percent since then, said Frank Walters, research director for M. Shanken Communications, publisher of Wine Spectator magazine.

Well I'm sure I could help boost those figures. I've been meaning to do some internet searching on hard cider in the USA (could be a song there) please post if anyone else comes across anything.

Portland Business Journal, 20th Jan 2006:

"Hard Cider in the USA has experienced a massive increase in sales of 128% during the last 9 months. Industry experts have put this down to the arrival of a number of English settlers in the Florida area. Sales in Florida alone increased from 12 cases in 2004 to 120,000 Swimming Pools full in 2005."

www.talisman.com/cider

I've jsut started to get cider emails from these people. They're quite US biased, and all about real cider, so might be useful in tracking down some decent stuff.

Good luck

Well they may be American but theyve got this bit exactly right:

What are some good commercial ciders?
There aren't any.

OK, that's a bit too harsh. There are no good mass-market or national brands available in the US. However, there are many good local and regional ciders! You'll just have to hunt around and ask around.

So what's wrong with the mass-market commercial ciders?
They're created to be cheap to make, bland, and sometimes nothing more than a way to get drunk. Instead of being made from all juice as a true cider would be, they're made with a little bit of apple juice and a bunch of sugar-water. The sugar ferments and adds to the alcohol content, but it adds nothing to the flavor. Some ciders are sweetened and/or carbonated to such an extent that you can't even taste the cider part. After all this, the chemist gets his hand in, adding flavorings to try to make up for the apple character that isn't there.

Odd isn't it? I might have to complicate my (previously very simple) world view and allowing that there are now officially two types of americans (one of which are OK because they like cider).

Perhaps this is all an elaborate hoax. Best to maybe monitor them for a while to make sure they don't start going on about how budweiser is really tasty.

I suppose it only says it's aimed at US readers, it could have been written by an Englishman who lives over there, and who is trying to educate the yanks maybe?

Then again, he does use the word "folks" a few times so that theory is probably wrong.
