check out this silly story about a women being taken to court for eating an apple while driving: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4203375.stm

"Chris Kay, prosecuting, said the cost of the case, not including the aerial photographs and video, was £425."

Aerial photographs of an apple in a car? What?

According to the Sun, the "Applegate" affair actually cost the police "farce" over £10k to gather the evidence. Glad my council tax isn't going to waste then... It will probably be on Crimewatch next month.

I've got to say, I agree with the cops on this one.

I ride a scooter 25 miles through London to work every day. It’s a regular thing to see people: doing their make up; having a shave; reading a book or a paper; texting; phoning; sending emails via blackberry; drinking a cup of coffee, etc.

They are often doing this whilst turning (it seems to be particularly favoured whilst turning right or going through junctions/pedestrian crossings, etc).

IMO, driving is something that you should concentrate solely on. It is not something that you do while you are doing something else. You are in charge of half a tonne of metal, in the centre of one of the most congested cities in Europe, and you have the arrogance to think that you’re so important, or such a fantastically skilled driver, that it’s OK for you to check your voicemail and have breakfast while you’re driving. I’m sorry, but I have no sympathy at all for prats like this.

It's a heck of a lot of money to spend to catch someone eating an apple, but IMHO it will be well worth it if it gets plenty of publicity, and if that in turn puts someone off doing the same thing when thay drive. Because that WILL save lives.

Dont disagree with the bird getting nicked, just the expense. Mind you, knowing the Sun it's all blown out of proportion...

Force everyone to do a minimum of 2 years on a motorbike before giving them a full car licence just so they know a. how painful it is when you hit the deck after being smacked by a car who's driver swears you "came out of nowhere" and b. just realise how crap everyone is at driving whilst NOT being surrounded by the latest Anti Bike Side Impact System.

Lobby your MP. General election soon - how about a DMZ Party? Mind you, petitioning for safer roads whilst demanding better cider might not go down too well....

More cider MUST equal safer roads Jack, as long as you make sure that everyone has so much that they can't stand up, let alone drive.
