You are a brave, brave, (almost stupidly brave) man. I don't think i would have touched it, although i was very tempted to buy a bottle of un-opened Coates cider from ebay and drink it not long ago.
Has he decided what to do with the cider yet? What are the options? Could he just serve it from the barrel?

The thing is, when the workmen found it, they said they opened the barrel and it smelled of cider, had they said vinegar, that would have been the end of it. When I saw the barrel I couldn't believe it, it was an old metal oil drum, rusted through in several places, with a plastic liner. We took the top off - and sure enough, there was a nice, healthy cider smell coming from within. We siphoned some out and had a look at it, it was very pale, sniffed it a few more times before Keith decided that I should be the one to be poisoned - sorry - have the honour of drinking it first. On first taste it was quite sharp with a distinct lemony flavour - not unpleasant, and with a very, very long finish. Once we'd established that I was unlikely to die, Keith tried some too (the bloody coward). We measured the sugar levels and recorded the alcohol at 7.8%. meanwhile, I kept swirling it about to get some air into it, as the flavours kept developing. After half an hour or so, the cider seemed to have smoothed out a bit, was less sharp, but still with a nice lemon flavour, and still with that very long finish that kept changing flavours. Extraordinary stuff. I'll be honest, it's not the best cider I've ever drank, but it's certainly the most interesting, and almost certainly unique. The cider was still "live" so it's been put into a tank and had some carbon dioxide put onto it to keep it quiet while he decides what to do with it.
And you will know us by the trail of empties.... |

All sounds very mysterious to me, a lemony cider that has been sealed away for 40 years (for some reason - why didn't its creator drink it?) and has now been released from its cage and is already "developing" and changing colour. It almost sounds like a living creature that could break out from its tank at any time and start wreaking havoc on the world! In fact, that could be a good Dr Who plot, I might sell it to the BBC.
Is there any chance of him selling the stuff? Would he be allowed to? I'm sure a pub might take it on, for novelty value if nothing else, and it's already gaining some publicity.
