The typical Liverpool reliance on history doesn't work in this case, as we are discussing the Champions League as it is, where you can get in by coming 4th (5th if you whine enough). Back when you had to be champions to be in it, it was obviously harder to win than the league as you had to win the league first.

i think in the last 10 years or so you just got to look at teams who have won the champions league without actually WINNING their DOMESTIC league the season before. I bet that would be interesting reading...

Here we go then...

2007 - European Cup Winners - AC Milan. Did they win their domestic title in 2006? No.

2006 - European Cup Winners - Barcelona. Did they win their domestic title in 2005? Yes.

2005 - European Cup Winners - Liverpool. Did they win their domestic title in 2004? No.

2004 - European Cup Winners - Porto. Did they win their domestic title in 2003? Yes.

2003 - European Cup Winners - AC Milan. Did they win their domestic title in 2002? No.

2002 - European Cup Winners - Real Madrid. Did they win their domestic title in 2001? Yes.

2001 - European Cup Winners - Bayern Munich. Did they win their domestic title in 2000? Yes.

2000 - European Cup Winners - Real Madrid. Did they win their domestic title in 1999? No.

1999 - European Cup Winners - Manchester United. Did they win their domestic title in 1998? No.

So to summarise, 4 out of 9 winners of the European Cup won their domestic league titles.

So to summarise, 44% of the last nine winners of the "Champions League" were actually champions.

The fact that less than half of the winners in the 9 years were actual champions devalues the competition even further. The sooner they go back to the big four european trophies the better! Cl for champions, UEFA cup for 2nd 3rd and 4th, cup winners cup for cup winners and anglo italian cup for city!

But then Everton wouldn't be in Europe

The European Cup isn't devalued. It is considered the most prestigous trophy in the game, and it's the competition the best teams in Europe play in (not neccesarily the winners of the domestic leagues)

Everton could win the league cup and get in the UEFA Cup!! Or they could beat you to 4th again and you will have to make do with the inter-toto cup!!

If liverpool won that, fat rafa could add that to his already gleaming trophy cabinet!! (which doesnt have a premiership trophy in it by the way)

Anyone else see Gerrard calling for a quota of english players in domestic teams? Looks like if's finally getting pissed off with the multitude of second rate foreigners in the liverpool squad!

which was going to be my next point of discussion...

i am getting narked off with this 'quota' thing. People already making excuses for if we dont qualify for Euro 08.

The premiership is the best league in the world... FACT. And the reason it is cas we have the best players in the world... FACT. If they happen to be foreign so be it. Surely the england players training and playing with the best players in the world day in day out isnt a bad thing??

But no, yet again we need to blame our underachievement on something else...

I didn't know Arsene Wenger posted under the username Jammer10.

I think the quota argument doesn't really apply to the best of the players playing here. There will always be room for those. The problem is that when a manager has a choice between an English player in the Championship or a nobody from East Europe or Africa, both of the same standard, he will go abroad as they are cheaper. It is those sort of players (of which Liverpool are more guilty than most of bringing in) that shouldn't be given the opportunity to grace the premier league ahead of english players.

Not much of a surprise that an Arsenal fan does not want a Foreign player quota rule is it! If that was brought in Arsenal could only field a team of 2 players!

The foreign players Liverpool bring in which might not be good enough, would be good enough for other teams in the prem.

Yeah, i could name quite a few foreign players Liverpool have had in the past who are total s**te, but they would have been good enough for other teams.

Most probably had international caps for their country though.

For next year's Champions League you must have 8 homegrown players out of your squad of 24, will Arsenal even manage that?!

Even if the rule became you had to have 6 English players in your starting 11, thats still up to 100 foreign players in our league every week, more than enough I reckon.

Also, anyone who makes themself unavailable for their country, eg Carragher & Scholes, should not be counted as an English player as they are no more use to the national team than a foreigner.

Anyway, I'm off to cheer on the few remaining available Englishmen now, good luck to all on Saturday.

Just had a look at the Liverpool squad and it looks like they might struggle to have 8 Homegrown players in there squad next season.

Never mind though, with the way the results are going so far this season they'll probably struggle to qualify anyway!

Liverpool wouldn't struggle to have 8 English players in the squad. FACT.

Unusually, Everton only have 9 English players in their 1st team squad of 28, whereas Liverpool have 12 out of a squad of 33.
